There are several different brands of Heat Pumps and A/C you can have installed at your home. Brands such as Trane, Rheem/Ruud, Lennox, etc are all top brands and are some of the more reliable.
However at the very bottom of the spectrum is the brand Goodman (and Janitrol). These are substandard poorly built rattle traps that are usually associated with the low bidder, small time HVAC contractor, or slum lord.
These units were commonly installed in the Phoenix area on new tract homes along with builder grade Trane and Carrier units. However the Goodman line had the highest failure rate, many times more than the Trane and Carrier failure rate combined!
Typical problems were bad (stack relay) blower relays that failed in approx. 75% of the heat pumps until they finally stopped using them about 3 years ago. However the condenser fan motors still don’t last any longer than about 3 years in our sun and the cap tubes (refrigerant tubing) in the heat pump condenser units would have about a 75% failure rate as well, and usually in the 1st through 3rd year.
The problem was so bad a few years ago that the many home owner associations leaned on the builder who then leaned on the installing contractor to extend the labor warranty by a few extra years.
In the video you will see the typical daily repairs I performed in an 5 square mile area I called “Goodman Country”. Yeah there were sections of homes with Tranes and Carriers in the nearby area, but Goodman failures were many, MANY times higher and these same repairs are all I did day in and day out for a few years. Same repairs on the same streets in the same neighborhoods!
It was so bad that when diagnosed the unit, the customer wouild say “it better not be those cap tubes leaking…” before I even told her my diagnoses!
Neighbors talk when 50+% of them have the same problems!

A Trane Model XR-11 heatpump with a metal fatigue (metal stress) problem in the center of the top grille. This is all due to the vibration and rotational torque from the fan starting. Vibration analysis is pending.
By appearances alone, it looks like someone stood on top of the unit, but that is not the case here. The metal has become torn in a nearly circular pattern. Hanging under the top support grille is the fan motor and fan blade. Once a small stress crack started, the repeated starting and stopping (torquing) of the fan motor caused a larger stress crack to grow (see center). Eventually the HVAC fan motor and fan blade fell down inside the unit and jammed from its own weight.
Its pretty old. Just do a search for Trane XR11.

Haier Heat Pumps, Gas Furnace, AC, Coils, Central Air.
Quality construction, compact size, low noise level, and a strong warranty are the main features of this line of equipment.
Its compact size makes it ideal for installations where space is limited, or where appearance requires a small sized condenser. The configuration of the refrigerant connections and power connection helps make installation simpler.
Haier has designed this equipment using a special sound control top, and Haier uses Bristol Benchmark series compressors. Both contribute to very low noise ratings as compared to other manufacturers.
The durable baked-on powder coat paint resists weathering, and the heavy-gauge louvered panels, which protect the coil, are removable for service and cleaning.
The coil itself is both high quality and efficiency and uses rifled copper refrigerant lines.
When replacing older 8 or 10 SEER units, the Haier D1 13 SEER system may produce a substantial reduction in operational cost.
Very few manufacturers offer a better warranty than Haier’s: 10 year ALL parts and compressor warranty!
