A Trane Model XR-11 heatpump with a metal fatigue (metal stress) problem in the center of the top grille. This is all due to the vibration and rotational torque from the fan starting. Vibration analysis is pending.
By appearances alone, it looks like someone stood on top of the unit, but that is not the case here. The metal has become torn in a nearly circular pattern. Hanging under the top support grille is the fan motor and fan blade. Once a small stress crack started, the repeated starting and stopping (torquing) of the fan motor caused a larger stress crack to grow (see center). Eventually the HVAC fan motor and fan blade fell down inside the unit and jammed from its own weight.
Its pretty old. Just do a search for Trane XR11.
